Bird Portraits

Grand Isle is a spit of land with sand beaches and warm Gulf waters along its southern edge and marshes spreading into Louisiana to the north. The interior the island is covered in low shrubs and a “chenier” (derived from the French word for wood, “chene,” meaning oak) of weathered oaks and hackberry trees. These diverse habitats are a haven to over 100 species of migrating birds that seek refuge and food on the island after their 500 mile trek from South America across the Gulf of Mexico. Each year we become “birders” and spend the month of April walking the island to spy beautiful birds just sitting so pretty for us.
