While on a trip to the British Virgin Islands, I had one of the most profound experiences of my life when I was able to snorkel along with a massive school of tarpon. It was a surreal experience as they were all around me, gliding silently in the water glimmering in the sunlight like liquid silver.

Tarpons are a prized game fish in Louisiana and especially at the end of July when Grand Isle, La hosts the International Tarpon Rodeo. Known for their strength, stamina, and fighting ability they make a spectacular show when hooked with acrobatic leaps into the air. Most often they are released but it is a proud fisherman that can get one of these beauties to the boat.
