Second Line (Takin It to the Street)

Nawlins

Louisianans love a parade. A “Second Line “parade can pop up at any event that is cause for a celebration….such as a New Orleans wedding. The “second line” is a tradition in which a brass band leads participants in an exuberant stroll. The walk is an exaggerated strutting to the rhythm of the jazz while twirling parasols or white handkerchiefs.

The “first line” is composed of the band and the bride and groom leading the way. The “second line” is those joining in the revelry as they form a line behind the band.
